People living in high-rise apartments or condominiums need to think ahead and be prepared in the event of a fire. At Strong Man, safety is a priority which we never waver. Know the fire safety features in your building and to help you prevent fires, check out our list below in order to get prepared:
- Select a building with a fully installed sprinkler system. If you’re building isn’t equipped with this feature, talk to your landlord or building management about installing a complete system.
- Meet with your landlord or building manager to learn about the specific safety features in your building. It’s important to know if there are fire alarms, sprinklers, voice communication procedures, evacuation plans and how best to respond to an alarm.
- Know the locations of all available exit stairs from your floor in case the nearest one is blocked by smoke or fire.
- Make sure all exits and stairwell doors are clearly marked and not locked or blocked by security bars or clutter.
- If there is a fire, pull the fire alarm on your way out to notify your neighbors and the fire department.
- When you do hear the fire alarm, feel the door before opening it and make sure you close all doors behind you as you leave. If the door is hot, use another way out; if it’s cool, leave in that direction.
- If an announcement is made throughout the building, listen carefully and follow the directions given.
- NEVER use the elevator unless instructed by the fire department. Always use the stairs.
There’s no such thing as too much fire safety. Follow these tips to keep yourself and your neighbors safe.
