Tarps today are a major part of modern construction. They can be used to cover scaffolding, block debris and protect construction sites from water or fire. But, why were tarps originally invented and how have they progressed? It all started with canvas.
Back in the 1800’s, tarps were an important part of every day life. They were used by pioneers and mountain men to cover wagons, build tents for sleeping and to take shelter from the sun. They used canvas for its many resilient qualities, including being naturally waterproof, sturdy and tear-resistant.
As technology and construction evolved, strong plastics like PVC were used to improve the quality of tarps, and tarps started to be used for safety by construction companies worldwide. And the evolution didn’t stop there. Fire-retardant tarps, for example, helped usher in a whole new dimension of safety.
