OSHA is looking to improve efficiency and reduce fraud by introducing new completion cards for both trainers and students who participate in their Outreach Training Program. The new cards are more difficult to counterfeit—with more durable, hard-to-copy cardstock, authorizing logos, watermarks and a QR code for authentication.
The push is in response to issues that some cities are having with adherence to their mandates that require OSHA training. New York, for example, saw a rise in construction-related deaths last year. When they investigated, they found and arrested workers on sites with fraudulent cards, who claimed to have been trained.
Cards also include other verification information. For student cards, student name, trainer name, date of issue and the OTI Education Center that produced the card are now included. For trainers, new cards feature trainer name, trainer ID number, expiration date and OTI Education Center where the trainer was authorized.
Those having already completed either the 10-hour or 30-hour training courses are not required to get new cards, but may choose to do so if they have completed their course in the last three years. New cards will cost $8 and can be obtained by contacting the instructor who conducted the training.
